4. And finally...
Hello,
Happy Easter from a very cold Italy. Here's a couple of nice games that
might help warm your classes up a bit...
1. Game of the Month: Indiana Jones
Thanks to "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" coming out next month
the whole world is going to go Indy Jones mad. It's always worthwhile borrowing
a little of the excitement for English class. This game comes from the
final part of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" where he has
to make his way across the cavern by jumping on the crumbling letters.
I'm sure you remember it. Here we'll use it to inject a bit of excitement
into phonics or "conversation" classes.
Preparation
Using a piece of chalk, draw a series of octagons on the floor. For the
phonics version of the game inside each one draw a letter of the alphabet.
Make sure each letter appears at least once. For the conversation version
of the game put a
Genki English picture card or
mini-card inside each octagon.
The game
1. Put the kids in teams.
2. The first kid from one team comes forwards and puts on the the Indiana Jones hat. (You can buy Indy hats at Amazon or ToysRus, or you could even make your own in craft or origami lessons.)
3. For the phonics version the teacher shouts out a word. For the conversation
version you shout out a question.
4. For the phonics version the kid has to jump to each letter of the word
in turn, then to the end of the game zone. In the conversation version
the kid has to jump on any answer to the teacher's question e.g. if the
question was "
How did you get here?" the kid has to jump on, and say, the aeroplane, train, car etc.
cards but not the "I'm hungry" or "It's rainy" or any
other theme's cards.
5. If they did it correctly they get a (print out of a) miniature Crystal
Skull. (Prepare them beforehand using google images.)
6. Repeat from step 2 with the next kid.
7. See which team has the most Crystal Skulls at the end.
Needless to say it's the putting on of the hat and the receiving of the
skulls that makes the game. And of course you need the Indiana Jones music
playing in the background. (Again see Amazon or iTunes, they have the download
of the Indy theme for 99 cents)
If you find the game a bit tricky to understand have a look at the animated version on the website, it should make things a bit easier:

Also keep in mind different kids can jump different distances, so make
the game space the right size.
2. Simple Soccer Game
This is a very simple game from Flossy in Austria to go with CD7's "Come
on, come on" song. Simply put the kids in a circle and give them a
ball. The kids pass the ball to the next person along whilst saying one
of the words from the song e.g. "throw", "catch", "score",
"pass", "kick" etc. and the next person has to do this
action. Very simple but lots of fun.
3. "Audio Only" CD Sets
A big request has been for not only the CD/CDROM versions of the Genki
English CDs (which have music in a CD player or animations and games in
a computer) but for "audio only" versions without the software
part. So we have a very limited edition "Audio Only" CD Set available.
Full details are on the site at:
http://genkienglish.net/cdset.htm
And if you haven't bought the full Teacher's Set yet, this week is the
best time to buy it with the dollar as low as it is. We are looking at
maybe having to increase the price if the dollar doesn't improve, at the
moment the set is a total bargain. See the link above for details.
4. And finally...
A few things we've had up on the Genki English blog over the last few weeks
are a fantastic printoutable village, a whole series of Junior High Worksheets,
some printable menus and the English versions of my articles for ALC's
"Kodomo Eigo" magazine. Oh, and a chance to win a trip to Disneyland
in Hong Kong.

Enjoy the new term and keep checking back for more and more new ideas on
the Genki English website. And tell your friends to pop along, the more
the merrier.
Be genki,
Richard
