Hello,
Before the rush of Christmas, November is a great time to work on some
higher level themes and get the kids even further on with their studies.
To help you out I have one of my favourite games....
1. Game of the Month: Super Hero
The TV show Heroes might not be too popular with younger kids, but this
game works great with students of all ages. The target language is "Can
he...?" or "Can she...?" + verbs, foods and drinks.
1. Put 8 A4 verb cards (
http://genkienglish.net/doing.htm) + food words (
http://www.genkienglish.net/doyoulike.htm ) + drinks (
http://genkienglish.net/drinks.htm ) on the board.
2. The kids get in groups.
3. Each group chooses a super hero, Ultraman, Batman, Spiderman etc.
4. They can either draw their hero on the board (kids are often good at
this) or you can prepare print outs of popular ones.
5. The kids guess one ability of their hero e.g. "Can (s)he dance?"
"Can (s)he eat bananas?" "Can (s)he drink water?"
6. On the back of each card is a "Yes" or "No" sticker.
7. If it's "Yes" your super hero gets a point.
8. If it's "No" your hero gets no points.
9. If you have a "Super Powers Zapped" sticker on the card they
lose all their points.
10. Continue from 5.
If you add in lots of drama and have cool pictures of the heroes, the kids
love this game. Add in 2 or 3 Zapped cards and even the weaker teams can
catch up. Plus as you take each card away once it is guessed, the easy
English goes first and it's a great chance to review the tougher words
further into the game. Of course the best thing from a language point of
view is showing the kids how they can use a structure such as "Can
..." and mix it in with words from other themes to make lots of new
sentences.
Speaking of which you might want to have a run through CD7's "
Can you kick?" song as a review to make sure the kids know the difference between
"Can he..." and "He can...". The song makes it quite
easy, plus you can also use the soccer picture cards in the game.
If you don't yet have them, all the songs can be found in the Download Pack:

2. Getting Genki with it Podcast

A couple of weeks ago I recorded a podcast (basically a half hour radio
show you can download) for
EslTeacherTalk.com. The host was Mark from
Mes-English and we seemed to have packed a lot of stuff in, from how I started teaching,
to how Genki English came about to a load of teaching hints and ideas,
especially about songs.
It was very interesting to hear Mark's questions, especially about how
to teach songs. Plus my games of the month were "Mingle" and
"Gorilla". If you want a recap on the Genki English story, how
to use the
songs (and why it's probably better to be a bad singer rather than a good one)
or just want a fun half hour's listening then check it out at:

3. And Finally....
If you are wanting to get a head start on your Christmas preparations then
we have two very popular themes for you:
What would you like for Christmas? (
http://www.genkienglish.net/whatdoyouwantforchristmas.htm )
& Genki Christmas Song (
http://www.genkienglish.net/christmassong.htm )
Plus the "Where are the Christmas presents?" picture book:

There'll be lots more Christmas stuff in next month's newsletter, and I'm
just starting work on the November update to the website so keep checking
back for lots of new ideas early next week.
Be genki,
Richard
